Teddy Bear Picnic - September 25 & 27, 2018

I love doing Teddy Bear Picnic, and I wish I could do more with it but limited with time, space, location, etc.  This year I planned on holding this in our pocket park area on the side of library, and have a nice storytime outside. I don't do this very often. I don't really know why, just that I haven't for a number of years - probably due to several things:  too hot, bugs, no easy way to transport supplies in and out, and today --- rain.  Yes.   There was a chance in the forecase this afternoon, but it started this morning a little before 8:00.  I was hoping it wouldn't be much, just  few sprinkles, and dry up by 10:30.  Oh no...there was thunder...and fairly good showers....    Oh well, we stayed inside, moving to the children's book area of the library, which is different for us as well.  I will show you why we were not in the meeting room, our normal area of the library, at the bottom of this post.

BOOKS:
This is the song that you can pull up on Youtube.  I found myself trying to sing the tune on some of the words.

I don't know about you guys, but I LOVE all the Bear books by Karma Wilson, but this is one of my favorites.  I like when the kids join in and "read" the part ..."and bear wants more" with me!

FELT BOARD:

http://www.makinglearningfun.com/themepages/TenintheBedFeltBoard.htm

This is one of my favorite felt board/songs to do!

RHYMES/SONG:

Teddy bear, teddy bear, turn around
Teddy bear, teddy bear, touch the ground.
Teddy bear, teddy bear, reach up high
Teddy bear, teddy bear, touch the sky
Teddy bear, teddy bear, bend down low
Teddy bear, teddy bear, touch your toes
Teddy bear, teddy bear, go upstairs,
Teddy bear, teddy bear, comb your hair
Teddy bear, teddy bear, turn out the light

Teddy bear, teddy bear, say goodnight.

Sing along to a classic childhood tune with this coloring sheet, featuring "The Bear Went Over the Mountain"!
I like the idea of this next one, but I can't for the life of me come up with the correct tune that will work with it.  (My musical non ability shows through here.)

SNACK/ACTIVITY:
Honeycomb necklaces for Teddy Bear Picnic playdateHoney Comb Cereal...I was going to have them make necklaces or string them, but the changes in the location multiple times and everything else we just ate them as a snack as we did our last activities.

TAKE HOME IDEAS:
I like to send something home with the kiddos....today it was a coloring sheet on one side of the paper and an alphabet dot to dot on the other side.

Okay...so I told you that I would show you why we had to change the location of our storytime in the library this morning....

Monday morning before the library opened...this happened.  Thank goodness no one was injured, and the only damage was to the front door area of the building, but also the door to the meeting room there on the left side.  The bottom glass area broke, so there was glass all over the carpet in the meeting room.  The carpet has been vacuumed several times, but one of the ladies here could still see some sparkly bits in the carpet, and we just didn't want to take a chance with little ones on the carpet.  Better safe than sorry.

Baby Shark, Doo Doo Doo - September 18 & 20, 2018

I do not know where I've been for the past however many years, but I just became privvy to the Baby Shark craze this past summer.  And now...I love it!   It's super catchy and gets stuck in my head.  So...of course I had to do a storytime around this theme, and because I love Baby Shark so much I also had to get myself a t-shirt and hand puppet!!!!  You know, when you wear this shirt, be prepared for comments and smiles...you will be a magnet for converation!

Hello Song:
We clap and sing hello
We clap and sing hello
With our friends at storytime
We clap and sing hello

I have a "Guess What's In the Box" box I made this summer, and I started out the story time with the puppet in the box.  First guess was that I had a dog inside, but the second guess was a shark!! :)

Song:  Clap a Friend's Name with Me  (which took a lot longer than I wanted it to given that I had a really great/large crowd this morning).

Clap a friend's name with me, name with me, name with me,
Clap a friend's name with me,
Let's clap Lesa!
Le - sa

First book:  Very cute; the pages are very busy with how the print is laid out, but fun!

The Three Little Fish and the Big Bad Shark by [Geist, Ken]

I found the "Two Little Sharks" fingerplay off of Sunflower Storytime blog.  They have a link to get a pattern to make the sharks!

Second Book:   It didn't seem that long when I read it to myself before hand, but when I was reading it during storytime with mixed age kiddos, it lost the attention of the really little kids. It's still a cute book though.

Then, the creme de la creme...

There is a "Feed the Shark" activity on the Sunflower Storytime blog along with a template.  It's very fun, and is a good activity to use with practicing colors.  So I made blue, red, green, & yellow fish.
Feed the Shark Preschool Activity - printable template
We sang:
If you  have a blue fish, blue fish, blue fish,
If you have a blue fish,
Come feed it to the shark.

...and then continued with the other colors of fish.

By this time, the kiddos were feeling really restless and it went "okay".

Goodbye Song -  "Tickle The Clouds"

Tickle the clouds
Tickle your toes
Turn around
and Tickle your nose (I had the shark puppet on and pretended to nibble my nose)
Reach down low.
Reach up high
Storytime is over
So say goodbye.

https://supersimpleonline.com has supercute songs and activities.

I put out the patterns and supplies needed for a baby shark headband...families could either take it home and do it or make one at the library before they left.

If you do a search for Baby Shark on this site there are a bunch of different crafts and coloring sheets, etc.

Storytime resumes this fall today.  Fantastic group of kiddos and their caregivers this morning.

We had "Hello" books and activities.

Books:

We always open and close with the same songs to show consistency, and implement a routine of beginning and ending.

Hello Song
We clap and sing hello
We clap and sing hello
With our friends at storytime
We clap and sing hello.

We wave and sing hello
We wave and sing hello
With our friends at storytime
We wave and sing hello.

We stomp and sing hello
We stomp and sing hello
With our friends at storytime
We stomp and sing hello.

Songs/Rhymes/Wigglers:

Sitting and listening for extended periods of time is not something this age of child is developmentally ready to do yet (although I have some really great kiddos in my group), we try to do some movement activities of some type in between stories.

Hands Go Up
(tune: Twinkle Twinkle Little Star)

Hands go up, and
Hands go down!
I can turn myself around,
I can stand up
on one shoe,
I can listen
So can you!
I can sit. I'll show you how!
Storytime is starting now!

Wiggle and Wiggle
We wiggle and wiggle and STOP
We wiggle and wiggle and STOP
We wiggle and wiggle and wiggle and wiggle
And wiggle and wiggle and STOP!

We clap...
We jump...
(do with any kind of movement of which you can think)

Wiggle Here, Wiggle There
A wiggle, wiggle here,
A wiggle, wiggle there.
Wiggle your hands,
Up in the air.
Wiggle your shoulders,
Wiggle your hips,
Wiggle your knees,
And move your lips.
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle,
And wiggle and bend.
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle,
And that is the end.

Clap, Clap
Clap, clap, clap your hands
as slowly as you can.
Clap, clap, clap your hands
as quickly as you can.

Roll, roll, roll your arms...
Shake, shake, shake your head...

Flap, flap, flap your arms...
Stomp, stomp, stomp your feet...
(do with any kind of movement of which you can think)

Folder Story:

Scat the Cat
https://nikarella.wordpress.com/2011/07/08/flannel-friday-scat-the-cat-folder-story/

I didn't get my Scat the Cat from this website, but I can't locate where I did find it, so I'm including this source...it's pretty close.

Goodbye Rhyme
Tickle the clouds
Tickle your toes
Turn around and
Tickle your nose.
Reach down low
Reach up high
Storytime is over
So wave goodbye!
